New cards

Adhesive capsulitis characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Restricted ROM/PROM from fibrosis of capsule, may lead to inflammation of RTC, Biceps tendon, and synovial tissue

Presentations: Ages 40-65, female, associated with DM and thyroid disease, capsular pattern loss

Treatment: Increased ROM with mobs, may need closed manipulation

2
New cards

Impingement syndrome characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Repetitive use injury, humeral head and RTC tendons get jammed up

Presentations: Painful arc (60-120) and positive special tests

Treatment: RICE, NSAIDs, RTC strengthening/scapular stability, improve biomechanics

3
New cards

RTC tear characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Impaired blood supply to tendon or Microtrauma (leads to degeneration) or macrotrauma

Presentation: Night or resting pain, limited abduction/ER, positive special tests

Treatment: RICE, NSAIDs, PROM/AAROM/AROM, strengthen around it, wait to return to functional activities with arthroscopic (6weeks) and traditional repair (12 weeks), after massive tear wait for 6-12mo for heavy resistance functional training

4
New cards

Lateral epicondylitis characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Chronic degen due to overuse to extensors

Presentation: 30-50yo, pain over lateral epi, positive special tests

Treatment: RICE, NSAIDs, cro, TENS, increased strength and wrist extensors

5
New cards

Medial Epicondylitis characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Chronic degen from overuse of flexors

Presentation: Pain over med epi with gripping, poor mechanics, positive special tests

Treatment: RICE, NSAIDs, cryo, TNES, strength and flexibility

6
New cards

Colles Fx characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: FOOSH resulting in dorsal displacement of distal radius, can result in “dinner fork” deformity

Presentation: Wrist pain, swell, deform, limited ROM, tenderness. Can result in CPRPS, decreased grip, loss of ROM, CTS

Treatment: NSAIDs, casting, splint, edema reduction, iso, PROM, modalities, increase strength

7
New cards

Smith’s Fx characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Distal radius fx from falling backwards on flexed hand, anterior displacement, “garden space deformity”

Presentation: Wrist pain, swell, tender. Can lead to CTS and CRPS

Treatment: NSAID, casting, edema reduction, isometrics, PROM/AROM, strength

8
New cards

Achilles tendinitis characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Repetitive overuse, as seen in patients with limited flexibility and strength

Presentation: Aching/burning in heel, tenderness, stiffness

Treatment: RICE, heel lifts, cross training, heel cord strengthening, ecc strength of gastroc/soleus

9
New cards

Plantar fasciitis characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Inflammation of plantar fascia at calcaneus, acute injury from excessive loading of foot

Presentation: heel pain, heel spur, morning pain, post activity pain, pain with walking w/o support

Treatment: RICE, NSAIDs, heel cup, massage with tennis ball, heel cord stretch, med. long. Arch tape

10
New cards

ACL sprain characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Contact or noncontact twist injury with hyperextension and valgus

Presentation: Knee buckle/pop, positive special tests

Treatment: RICE, NSAIDs, strengthen quads and hammies, brace, mini squats

11
New cards

MCL Sprain characteristics, presentations, and treatment

Characteristics: Contact or noncontact injury with valgus force and tibial ER

Presentation: Swell, painful gait, decreased ROM, instability, positive special tests

Treatment: RICE, NSAIDs, Progressive strengthening, increase ROM
