Digestive System
A system responsible for the digestion of food, which includes the alimentary canal and accessory organs.
Peritoneum
Serous membranes of the abdominal cavity, consisting of visceral and parietal layers.
Alimentary Canal
Continuous muscular tube running from the mouth to the anus, consisting of the digestive tract.
Mucosa
The innermost layer of the digestive tract, which includes the epithelium, lamina propria, and muscularis mucosae.
Submucosa
Layer of connective tissue in the digestive tract that contains blood vessels, nerves, and lymphatics.
Muscularis Externa
Layer of the digestive tract responsible for peristalsis, consisting of circular and longitudinal muscle layers.
Serosa
The outermost layer of the digestive tract, consisting of connective tissue and mesothelium.
Salivary Glands
Glands that produce saliva, including the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands.
Teeth
Hard structures used in the mechanical process of digestion, categorized into incisors, canines, and molars.
Esophagus
A flat muscular tube that transports food from the pharynx to the stomach.
Gastroesophageal Sphincter
Muscle that surrounds the opening between the esophagus and the stomach, preventing backflow of stomach contents.
Small Intestine
Major site for digestion and absorption, divided into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
Villi
Fingerlike projections of the intestinal mucosa that maximize absorption in the small intestine.
Large Intestine
Organ responsible for absorbing water and forming feces, including the cecum, colon, rectum, and anus.
Hepatic Portal Vein
Vein that carries blood from the digestive organs to the liver for filtration.
Pancreas
Accessory digestive organ that produces enzymes and bicarbonate for digestion.
Liver
Largest gland in the body, responsible for detoxification, substance metabolism, and bile production.
Gallbladder
Muscular sac that stores and concentrates bile.
Intrinsic Fact
A substance produced by parietal cells of the stomach, essential for vitamin B12 absorption.
Gastric Glands
Glands in the stomach that secrete gastric juices including pepsinogen and hydrochloric acid.
