Examination series

A collection of examinations that are held on the same date and use the same test booklet(s).

Subject areas

The specific topics included in an examination, listed under the heading “Subjects of Examination” in the Examination Announcement.

Test Task

An explanation provided in the study guide of how questions in a specific subject area will be presented and how to correctly answer them.

Civil Service Law section 50(11)

The law stating that the removal, reproduction, or reconstruction of test material from memory may be considered an illegal act punishable by imprisonment and/or fine.

Disqualification

A penalty for actions such as cheating, using prohibited devices, or violating test security, which may also bar a candidate from taking civil service exams for five years.

Prohibited devices

Electronic, communication, or photographic items strictly forbidden at the test site, including cellphones, smart watches, Fitbits, iPads, tablets, and E-Readers.

Language Fluency

A subject area testing the ability to summarize information clearly and accurately, and to identify spelling, grammatical, or punctuation errors.

Information Ordering and Language Sequencing

A subject area testing the ability to properly identify the sequence of events or to organize information to fit a timeline.

Problem Sensitivity and Reasoning

A subject area testing the ability to apply information such as policies and rules to identify problems and select the best course of action.

Selective Attention

A subject area testing the ability to focus on details while performing repetitive tasks, such as matching an exact series of letters, symbols, or numbers.

Visualization

A subject area testing the ability to imagine how something will look when its parts are moved or changed, specifically used for recognizing facial structure despite disguises.

Spatial Orientation

A subject area testing the ability to navigate within spaces or determine the shortest (least distance) route from one point to another using a map.

Situational Judgment

A subject area testing the ability to rate the effectiveness of potential responses to realistic, work-related challenges.

Designated Mental Health Facilities (DMHFs)

The preferred city facilities equipped to handle mental health issues, typically open from $6:00\,a.m.$ to $9:00\,p.m.$

Designated emergency room

Emergency rooms at Walter K. Woodworth Memorial Hospital and the University Hospital preferred for mental health cases if DMHFs are closed or overburdened.
