Hindbrain
Lower region of the brainstem comprising the cerebellum, pons, and medulla; controls essential autonomic functions like breathing, heart rate, and motor coordination.
Midbrain
Middle region of the brainstem that integrates visual and auditory sensory information and relays it upward, while also assisting in motor control and alertness.
Forebrain
Largest and most complex brain region, including the cerebral cortex and limbic system; responsible for high-level cognitive processes, sensory processing, and emotion.
Brainstem
Central trunk of the brain connecting the cerebrum to the spinal cord; manages automatic survival functions.
Medulla
Base of the brainstem that controls critical involuntary, life-sustaining functions such as heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure.
Thalamus
Sensory control center located atop the brainstem; directs messages to sensory receiving areas in the cortex and transmits replies to lower brain centers.
Reticular formation
Nerve network extending through the brainstem that plays a vital role in controlling arousal, alertness, and the sleep-wake cycle.
Cerebellum
Structure at the rear of the brainstem that processes sensory input, coordinates voluntary movement and balance, and enables nonverbal learning.
Limbic system
Neural system located below the cerebral hemispheres; associated with emotions, drives, and memory formation.
Amygdala
Two neural clusters in the brain's emotional network that act as primary drivers of emotional processing, particularly fear and aggression.
Hypothalamus
Structure lying below the thalamus that regulates bodily maintenance drives (hunger, thirst, body temperature), governs the endocrine system, and is linked to emotion and reward.
Hippocampus
Curved structure in the limbic system that helps process explicit memories for long-term storage.
Cerebral cortex
Intricate fabric of interconnected neural cells covering the cerebral hemispheres; acts as the ultimate control and information-processing center.
Frontal lobes
Portion of the cerebral cortex lying behind the forehead; involved in speaking, muscle movements, decision-making, planning, and judgment.
Parietal lobes
Portion of the cerebral cortex at the top-rear of the head; receives and processes sensory input for touch and body position.
Occipital lobes
Portion of the cerebral cortex at the back of the head; receives and processes visual information.
Temporal lobes
Portion of the cerebral cortex above the ears; contains auditory areas that receive and process sound information.
Motor cortex
Area at the rear of the frontal lobes that controls voluntary movements of specific body parts.
Somatosensory cortex
Area at the front of the parietal lobes that registers and processes body touch and movement sensations.
Association areas
Regions of the cerebral cortex not involved in primary motor or sensory functions; involved in higher mental functions like learning, thinking, and speaking.
