What is the process of anaerobic respiration in animals
Glycolysis happens as usual
As there is no O2 oxidative phosphorylation will not occur
NADH is not being oxidised so eventually there will be no more NAD so glycolysis would stop
Pyruvate is reduced into lactate
NADH is oxidised which allows glycolysis to continue
Lactate is acidic and causes muscle fatigue, so instead is sent off to the liver to be metabolised
What is the process of anaerobic respiration called in plants
Fermentation
What is the process of anaerobic respiration in plants
Pyruvate is decarboxylated then reduced to ethanol
NADH is oxidised to NAD allowing glycolysis to carry on
Ethanol is toxic as it can dissolve cell membranes, so it is used as biofuel, or brewing, or breadmaking
How does a respirometer work
It measures the amount of O2 taken in by an organism by measuring the distance a liquid moves.
Seeds would respire so O2 is used up and O2 from experimental tube would diffuse to the seeds.
CO2 produced via respiration is absorbed by the Soda lime
Volume of gas in experimental tube decreases so the pressure decreases
Pressure is higher in control tube, so the red liquid moves towards the experimental tube ( down the pressure gradient)
The liquid moves because the air in the U tube moves from the control into the experimental pushig the liquid
What is the formula for calculating rate of respiration
Volume/ (time x mass)
How is uncertainty calculated
distance +- uncertainty of instrument
