What is eschatology?

the study of the end of time

What does John say about the resurrection?

The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;" (John 11:25)

We have the opportunity for eternal life through Jesus by following his path.

What does the parable of sheep and goats teach about eschatology?

How you treat others will determine where you go to after death- just as the sheep were separated from the goats

Explain TWO Christian beliefs about the afterlife

-Christians actions when they are alive on Earth will influence where they go after death

-All humans have a soul which will depart their mortal body at the point of death, this means some Christians believe it will be their soul which is resurrected to be judged at death.

What are the last four things?

Death, Judgement, Heaven, Hell

Explain 'Death'

The time where your immortal sin departs and is separated from the mortal body to rise and be judged by God.

Explain 'Judgement'

Can be split into 'Particular' and 'Last':

-Particular refers to the judgement which occurs at the point of death, a person will be sent to heaven, hell or purgatory based on their actions in life.

-Last refers to the time when the world ends and God will bring together all of creation to judge as a whole

Explain 'heaven'

This is a place of spiritual happiness and perfection as a reward from God for following him in your mortal life you will meet him face to face.

Explain 'hell'

This is a place of torment and torture. A place of eternal separation from God because one chose to be separated from God which shall be respected because we are all given free will.

Explain two catholic beliefs about purgatory.

-The belief it is a place of cleansing that occurs when venial sin must be removed before heaven

-Purgatory is the final phase of Christ's applying to us the purifying redemption that he accomplished for us by his death on the cross.

Explain two ways purgatory may influence Catholic's actions.

-To pray for their loved ones

- To live a very holy life

Explain two beliefs about the afterlife found in the 'Rich man and Lazarus'

-This parable sends the message that worldly and earthly possessions are of no benefit in the afterlife (The rich man was condemned to hell)

-Hell is a place of eternal torture ('for I am in agony in these flames.'

Explain two ways the 'rich man and Lazarus' influences Catholic's actions.

-To help those who are poor by donating money/wealth to charity (who longed to satisfy his hunger)

-To live a holy life in order to avoid sin (between you and us a great chasm has been fixed)

What is the sacrament of the anointing of the sick?

When those who are near death will be cleansed for their sins by a priest, he will sprinkle holy water and recite words to help them.

-It is used at a baptism to guide a child to follow the footsteps of God

- It symbolises eternity (Alpha-Omega symbols)
