Cover 0
MAN, no help. Blitz likely. Get ball out in <2 sec. Attack: quick slant, hitch, hot route. Danger: don't hold the ball, no safety net.
1 high safety (dead middle). Corners press or tight off. 1 extra defender free (robber/spy).
MAN with 1 deep safety. Attack: seams (safety can't cover both), pick plays, mismatches (fastest guy vs slowest defender). Watch for: the free defender lurking underneath.
2 deep safeties, split hash to hash. Corners often press, funnel routes inside/underneath.
ZONE, 2 deep / 5 under. Attack: the flats, the deep middle seam (gap between the two safeties), or throw before the corner squeezes the flat. Danger: don't throw outside 12-15 yds to the sideline, safety rotates over.
1 safety pre-snap, rotates to 3 deep zones post-snap. Corners off, bail at snap.
ZONE, 3 deep / 4 under. Attack: flats (only 1 underneath defender per flat), seam between the 2 outside thirds and the middle third. Danger: middle of field is manned by 1 deep defender, don't force it deep middle.
2 safeties + both corners all deep (4 across). Very passive shell.
ZONE, 4 deep / 3 under. Attack: underneath is soft, take the easy completions, be patient, this coverage takes away everything deep on purpose. Danger: don't force a deep shot, it's not there.
Pre-snap looks like 2-high (Cover 2 or 4).
Watch for ROTATION after the snap — safety can rotate down into Cover 3 or Cover 1 at the last second. This is the #1 way defenses bait a QB into a bad read. Trust your PROGRESSION, not just your pre-snap guess.
LB or safety creeping toward the line right before snap. Corner has no help over top.
Blitz coming. Answer: hot route / sight adjustment, get rid of it fast, don't hold and climb the pocket into the rush.
