Illicit drug
A controlled substance or precursor for which import, export, production, sale, or possession is prohibited or restricted.
Controlled Drugs and Substances Act
Canadian legislation that regulates the possession, production, and distribution of controlled substances.
Chromatography
A method for separating and identifying the components of a mixture based on their movement through a stationary phase.
Spectrophotometry
An analytical tool that measures the quantity of radiation absorbed by a material as a function of wavelength.
Qualitative determination
A determination that identifies the material present.
Quantitative determination
A determination that measures the percent composition of the components of a mixture.
Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)
A separation technique using a solid stationary phase and a mobile liquid phase to analyze components of a mixture.
Gas chromatography (GC)
A technique where a gas (carrier gas) moves through a column to separate components of a mixture, producing a chromatogram.
Mass spectrometry
An analytical technique that identifies substances based on the mass of the ions produced from fragments after being ionized.
Rf value
The rate of flow value that indicates the distance a substance travels on a chromatography plate relative to the solvent front.
