What is the Sino-Atrial node?
A specialised tissue located on the outside of the right atrium
What does the Sino-Atrial node do?
Generates an electrical impulse that spreads across the atria causing them to contract
What prevents the impulse from spreading to the ventricles immediately and why?
A line of insulated cells, so that the atria contract first
Where is the atrio-ventricular node (AVN)?
In the middle of the heart is a line of muscle called the septum. The AVN is on this muscle
What is the AVN stimulated by?
The impulse from the Sino-Atrial node to generate a 2nd wave of electrical impulse.
What does the 2nd wave of impulse do?
Travels down the septum and causes ventricles to contract from the bottom upwards to squeeze blood up and out
What is the Sino-Atrial Node connected to and why?
The nervous system, so stimulation can be moderated by the brain in response to wider body.
How can the Sino-Atrial node be replaced artificially?
By a Pacemaker
