Epigastric Pain Conditions and Symptoms

Burning or gnawing epigastric pain related to meals (worse with eating in gastric ulcers, relieved by eating in duodenal ulcers), bloating, early satiety, nausea.

Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD)

Epigastric discomfort or pain, nausea, vomiting, feeling of fullness after eating, possible gastrointestinal bleeding.

Gastritis

Chest pain or discomfort (may present as epigastric pain), shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, vomiting, pain radiating to the jaw, neck, or arm.

Myocardial Infarction (MI)

Severe epigastric pain radiating to the back, nausea, vomiting, abdominal tenderness, fever, rapid heartbeat.

Pancreatitis

Sudden, intense epigastric or right upper quadrant pain after fatty meals, may radiate to the right shoulder or back, nausea, vomiting.

Biliary Colic

Severe epigastric pain, unproductive retching, inability to pass a nasogastric tube, abdominal distension.

Gastric Volvulus

Vomiting followed by bright red blood (hematemesis), epigastric or back pain, possible signs of shock.
