Cultural Diversity

The coexistence of different ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic groups within one social unit.

Culture

A shared system of beliefs, values, and behavioral expectations that provides social structure for daily living.

Subculture

A large group of people who are members of a larger cultural group, having certain ethnic, occupational, or physical characteristics not common to the larger culture.

Dominant group

The group in society, usually the largest, that has the most authority to control the values and sanctions of society.

Minority group

A smaller group in society whose physical or cultural characteristics identify them as different from the dominant group.

Cultural assimilation (acculturation)

A process in which minorities living within a dominant group lose the characteristics that made them different, and their values are replaced by those of the dominant culture.

Culture shock

The feelings a person experiences when placed in a different culture, which may result in psychological discomfort or disturbances.

Ethnicity

A sense of identification with a collective cultural group, largely based on the group's common heritage.

Race

A category typically based on specific physical characteristics such as skin pigmentation, body stature, facial features, and hair texture.

Cultural blindness

Occurs when people ignore differences in the cultures in which they live and proceed as if those differences do not exist.

Ethnocentrism

The belief that one's own ideas, beliefs, and practice are the best, superior, or most preferred to those of others.

Cultural humility

Recognition of diversity and power imbalances among individuals or communities, with the action of being open, self-aware, egoless, flexible, and exuding respect and supportive interactions.
