Subject-matter jurisdiction

Original jurisdiction

Appellate jurisdiction

authority restricted by subject matter, remedy, amount, or another statutory limitation

General jurisdiction

broad authority to hear many kinds of civil and criminal matters.

Removal

the statutory procedure through which an eligible action filed in state court may be transferred to federal court by a defendant.

Remand

The process through which a removed action is returned to state court when federal jurisdiction or removal requirements are not satisfied
