Physical Geology
The study of the materials composing planets, the processes acting on those materials, and the products formed as a result.
Historical Geology
The subfield of geology that examines Earth's history and the history of life on Earth.
Solar Nebula Hypothesis
The model proposing that the Sun and other objects in the Solar System formed approximately 4.6 Ga (4.6 billion years ago) from the collapse and condensation of a rotating nebula.
Nebula
A cloud of gas and dust in space from which solar systems coalesce and where stars build elements through nuclear fusion.
Frost Line
The informal transition zone in the solar nebula separating the warm inner region (where rocks and metals condensed into solid form) from the cooler outer region (where hydrogen compounds condensed alongside metals and rocks).
Planetesimal Accretion
The process by which rocky particles and gases coalesce under gravity to grow into larger planetary bodies.
Terrestrial Planets
Small, rocky planets located close to the Sun that possess thin atmospheres, including Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.
Gas Giants
Massive planets located far from the Sun with thick atmospheres, including Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Dwarf Planet
A spherical celestial object that orbits the Sun and is not a moon, but lacks clear orbital space because other objects occupy its orbit.
Kuiper Belt
An area full of icy bodies and dwarf planets located at the outer edge of our solar system beyond Neptune.
Asteroids
Rocky and metallic planetesimals that orbit the Sun, such as Eros.
Comets
Icy planetesimals composed of water ice and other frozen liquids or gases that exhibit a visible coma (tail) as they approach the Sun.
Synchronous Rotation
The condition where a celestial body rotates on its axis at the same rate that it revolves around its parent body, resulting in the same hemisphere facing the parent body continuously.
Impact Hypothesis
The concept that the Moon formed about 4.5 billion years ago when a planetary body collided with the early Earth, ejecting rocky debris into orbit that aggregated into Luna.
Biogeochemical Processes
Interactions between rocks, water, gases, sediments, and living organisms, driven by solar energy, gravity, and heat from Earth's interior.
Critical Thinking
The use of reasoning to explain natural phenomena, requiring that any proposed explanation be testable.
Inductive Reasoning
A logical procedure in the scientific method where specific observations are used to formulate a hypothesis or broad generalization.
Principle of Parsimony
The scientific rule that the simplest and most likely explanation for a set of observations is often the correct one.
Deductive Reasoning
A logical procedure in the scientific method that generates testable predictions derived from an established hypothesis.
Scientific Method
A framework that uses observations and experiments, combining induction and deduction, to construct, test, and refine hypotheses explaining natural phenomena.
Principle of Uniformitarianism
The foundational geological principle stating that Earth is very old and that natural processes operating today have been uniform through time, summarized as 'the present is the key to the past.'
Theory of Plate Tectonics
A comprehensive geological theory explaining continental movement, mountain building, volcanic chains, and fossil similarities across ocean basins.
Seafloor Spreading
The concept proposed by Harry Hess establishing that new oceanic crust forms at spreading centers, supplying the mechanism for continental drift.
Pangaea
The ancient supercontinent proposed in Alfred Wegener's continental drift theory from which modern continents evolved via rifting and plate motion.
Rock
A solid aggregation of one or more minerals.
Geologic Hazards
Dangerous natural events produced by geological processes, including volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, mass wasting events, and major storms.
Natural Resources
Materials found in nature that are essential or useful to human civilization, most of which are non-renewable geological deposits.
Geologic Time Scale
A chronological system summarizing Earth's history by dividing time into progressively shorter intervals (Eons, Eras, Periods, Epochs) based on strata and fossil records.
Cleavage
The physical property of a mineral describing its tendency to break along planes of structural weakness.
Fracture
The physical property of a mineral referring to breakage that occurs irregularly or conchoidally rather than along a cleavage plane.
Hardness
A mineral's physical resistance to scratching or abrasion, evaluated using standard reference materials.
Luster
The character or appearance of reflected light from a mineral's surface, described as metallic or nonmetallic.
Crystal Form
The geometric shape expressed by a mineral sample based on its internal structure, such as cubic or hexagonal.
Streak
The color of a mineral when it is reduced to a powder by rubbing across an unglazed porcelain plate.
