What is substance abuse?
Any unnecessary or improper use of chemical substances for non-medical purposes.
What are illegal drugs?
Chemical substances that people of any age may not lawfully manufacture, possess, buy, or sell.
Define illicit drug use.
The use or sale of a substance that is illegal or otherwise not permitted.
What constitutes an overdose?
A strong, sometimes fatal reaction to taking a large amount of a drug.
How is addiction defined?
A physiological or psychological dependence on a drug.
What is marijuana?
A plant whose leaves, buds, and flowers are usually smoked for their intoxicating effects.
What is paranoia?
An irrational suspiciousness or distrust of others.
What are inhalants?
Substances whose fumes are sniffed or inhaled to give a mind-altering effect.
What are anabolic-androgenic steroids?
Synthetic substances that are similar to male sex hormones.
Define psychoactive drugs.
Chemicals that affect the central nervous system and alter activity in the brain.
What are designer drugs?
A synthetic drug that is made to imitate the effects of hallucinogens and other drugs.
What are hallucinogens?
Drugs that alter moods, thoughts, and sense perceptions including vision, hearing, smell, and touch.
What is euphoria?
A feeling of intense well-being or elation.
Define depressants.
Substances that lower the activity of the central nervous system.
What are stimulants?
Substances that increase the activity of the central nervous system.
What are opiates?
Drugs like those derived from the opium plant that are obtainable only by prescription and are used to relieve pain.
What is rehabilitation in the context of drug dependence?
Process of medical and psychological treatment for physiological or psychological dependence on a drug or alcohol.
What are the 4 main groups of psychoactive drugs?
Depressants, Stimulants, Hallucinogens, Opiates.
What are 6 factors that influence a teen's choices about drug use?
Peer pressure, Family members, Role models, Media messages, Perceptions of drug behaviors, Misleading information.
What is the drug found in marijuana?
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
What are gateway drugs?
Drugs that lead the user to try other, more dangerous drugs.
What does androgenic mean?
Male sex characteristics (hairy legs, deepened voice).
Is alcohol a depressant or stimulant?
Alcohol is a depressant.
What hallucinogen is used to treat animals?
Ketamine, an anesthetic.
What psychoactive drug provides pain relief?
Opiates.
What are ecstasy or MDMA?
Drugs that have both stimulant and hallucinogenic effects.

What is the effect of combining alcohol with other depressants?
It can cause a fatal mix.
What are warning signs of teen drug use?
Talking constantly about drugs, stopping participation in important activities, changes in eating or sleeping habits, weight loss, unnecessary risks, participating in unsafe behaviors, trouble with authority figures, careless about appearance, withdrawal or depression, difficulty concentrating, declining grades.
What does a drug treatment center offer?
Group counseling, short-term treatment, medication therapy, therapeutic communities, drug counselors, support groups.
