Independent variable
The factor in an experiment that the scientist intentionally changes or manipulates to test its effects.
Dependent variable
The factor that is measured or observed to see how it responds to changes made during an experiment.
Controlled variable
A factor that is kept strictly constant throughout an experiment to ensure a fair test.
Scientific method: Question
The starting step where a scientist identifies a specific problem or curiosity about a natural phenomenon to investigate.
Scientific method: Hypothesis
A testable prediction or educated guess about an outcome, often structured as an 'If… then…' statement.
Scientific method: Procedure
The detailed, step-by-step plan or instructions followed to carry out an experiment safely and accurately.
Scientific method: Data analysis
The process of organizing, examining, and looking for patterns or trends in the gathered observations and measurements.
Scientific method: Conclusion
A summary statement explaining whether the experimental evidence supported or rejected the original prediction.
Scientific method: Evaluation
The final step of reviewing the experiment to identify potential errors, assess reliability, and suggest improvements for future testing.
Independent variable
The one thing you change on purpose in an experiment.
Dependent variable
The thing you measure or observe to see the result.
Controlled variable
The thing you keep the exact same to make the test fair.
Scientific method: Question
The first step where you state what you want to find out.
Scientific method: Hypothesis
An educated guess about what will happen, often written as an 'If… then…' statement.
Scientific method: Procedure
The step-by-step directions for doing the experiment.
Scientific method: Data analysis
Looking closely at your results and measurements to find patterns.
Scientific method: Conclusion
A final summary explaining if your results supported your guess.
Scientific method: Evaluation
Checking your experiment to spot mistakes and figure out how to improve it next time.
