Precambrian to Present
The historical timeframe during which continuous geological activities formed the current topography of Afghanistan, including its high mountains and deep valleys.
Tethys Ocean
A vast ancient ocean that covered large areas of Central Asia, including parts of modern-day Afghanistan, during the Mesozoic era.
Mesozoic Era Rocks
Geological formations primarily consisting of limestone, sandstone, shales, and conglomerates found in the southern parts of the Hindu Kush.
Cenozoic Era
The third geological period during which significant sedimentary remains such as shales, conglomerates, sandstones, and volcanic rocks were formed.
Khamab
The lowest point in Afghanistan, located in the northwest at an elevation of 259 m above sea level.
Noshaq
The highest peak in Afghanistan, located in the eastern Hindu Kush, with an elevation of 7485 m above sea level.
Terajmir
A peak located in Chitral with an elevation of 7750 m, situated outside of Afghanistan's borders.
Low-Elevation Lands
Areas in Afghanistan that have an elevation ranging from 300 m to 500 m above sea level.
Agricultural Fertile Lands
Territories situated between an average elevation of 500 m and 2000 m above sea level.
Mountainous Regions
Lands with elevations ranging from 2000 m to 6000 m that encompass all of Afghanistan's mountain ranges.
Hindu Kush Mountains
A major mountain range that divides Afghanistan into northern and southern watersheds, separating the Kabul River basin from the Amu River basin.
Koh-e-Baba
A major mountain range in central Afghanistan starting from the Hajigak pass, with its highest peak, Shah Fuladi, at 5140 m.
Spin Ghar (Safid Koh)
A mountain range south of Nangarhar, formerly known as Eastern Safid Koh, whose highest peak is Sikaram at 4755 m.
Sulaiman Mountains
A range extending 600 km along the eastern borders of Afghanistan, separated into eastern and western parts, with the Takht-e-Sulaiman peak at 3200 m.
Tirband-i-Turkistan
A mountain range in northwest Afghanistan, 300 km in length, located between Faryab and Badghis provinces, famous for its pistachio forests.
Marco Polo Sheep
A rare animal species found in the Wakhan valleys and high central plateaus of Afghanistan.
Industrial Forests
Evergreen needle-leaf forests growing between 2000 m and 3000 m in the southern and eastern provinces, such as Paktia, Kunar, and Laghman.
Pistachio Forests
Forests covering approximately 3000 hectares in the northwestern provinces of Badghis and Samangan.
Zira (Cumin)
A wild plant exported from Afghanistan, with the valleys of Badakshan producing some of the highest quality varieties in the world.
Hydrosycle (Water Cycle)
The continuous process of water changing between gas, solid, and liquid states across the atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, and biosphere.
Amu River (Oxus)
The largest river in northern Afghanistan, known historically as Oxus by Greeks and Jihun by Arabs, forming a 1200 km political border.
Kabul River Basin
A watershed covering approximately 12.5% of Afghanistan's area (75390 km2), flowing into the Indus River at Attock.
Helmand River
The longest river in its basin, originating from the Paghman mountains and flowing 1400 km to the Helmand Hamun.
Harirod
A river in western Afghanistan, 850 km long, which forms the political border between Afghanistan and Iran from Islam Qala to Dahan-e-Zulfiqar.
Band-e-Amir
A series of natural deep blue lakes in the Hindu Kush mountains formed by limestone deposits, categorized as a National Park.
Zarkul Lake
A lake located on the Pamir plateau between Afghanistan and Tajikistan, serving as the primary source for the Pamir and Amu rivers.
Drought
A natural phenomenon defined by rainfall dropping below the average level, failing to meet the needs of humans, animals, plants, and soil.
