What is an entomologist?
People who study insects by observing, collecting, rearing and conducting experiments. Evolution, ecology, behavior, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and genetics (of insects and their relatives)
Many biologists work with insects for many reasons:
Ease of rearing in a laboratory
Rapid growth and availability of many individuals
Minimal ethical concerns
Ecological diversity
Insect Diversity
Insects constitute about 75% of all animal species
How many insect species are there?
about 1 Million
How many orders of insects will we study?
28
Which order of insect is the most diverse?
Coleoptera
insects are…
diverse, outnumbered, and everywhere!
Some reason for success of insects:
Small size
Short generation time
Reproductive potential
Exoskeleton
Metamorphosis
Flight
Sensory capabilities
Interactions with plants and other organisms
Importance of Insects:
Insects in human activities
Insects in ecosystem
Natural compounds derived from insects
Model organisms for scientific research
Insect body parts:
head, thorax, and abdomen
Insects originally have __ segments.
20 segments,
Head (6 segments)
Thorax (3 segments)
Abdomen (11 segments)
The anterior part of the head is the
frons
he anterior dorsal part of the head, between the eyes is the
vertex
The area below the compound eye, on the side of the head, is the
gena
The liplike sclerite is the
clypeus
Insect eyes
• Compound eyes
• Ocelli (simple eyes of adult & nymph)
• Stemmata (simple eyes of larva)
