Peripheral Circulatory System

The system that includes the systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation.

Systemic Circulation

The pathway in which blood flows from the heart to the body and back.

Pulmonary Circulation

The pathway in which blood flows from the heart to the lungs and back.

Varicose Veins

Veins that have become swollen and tortuous, often due to valve incompetence.

Vasa Vasorum

Small blood vessels that supply blood to the walls of larger blood vessels.

Capillaries

Small blood vessels where the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste occurs.

Arteriovenous Anastomoses

Connections between arteries and veins that allow blood to bypass capillary networks.

Aorta

The main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

Valves in Veins

Structures that prevent the backflow of blood in veins, particularly in larger and medium veins.

Phlebitis

Inflammation of a vein, usually occurring in the legs.

Gangrene

Tissue death due to a reduction or loss of blood supply.

Sympathetic System

Part of the autonomic nervous system that generally stimulates contraction of blood vessels.

Parasympathetic System

Part of the autonomic nervous system that generally promotes dilation of blood vessels.

Continuous Capillaries

Capillaries with a continuous endothelial lining that have lower permeability.

Fenestrated Capillaries

Capillaries with pores that increase permeability for larger molecules.

Sinusoidal Capillaries

Highly permeable capillaries with large openings, allowing passage of cells and proteins.

Venous Compression

The process of skeletal muscle contraction that aids in venous blood flow toward the heart.
