Respiration

Transfers energy from glucose (sugar) to plants and animals. Releases carbon dioxide to atmosphere

(happens in mitochondria).

Photosynthesis

Transfers energy from sun to make glucose in plants. Removes carbon dioxide from atmosphere (happens in chloroplasts).

Combustion

(burning) Releases heat energy and carbon dioxide to atmosphere.

Decomposition

The breakdown of plant and animal remains. This releases carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

Fossil fuel

A fuel formed in the earth from dead plants or animals.

Carbon store

A place where carbon is stored in different forms

Carbon emissions

Carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere by vehicles and industry

Greenhouse gas

Heat- trapping gases including carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour.

Carbon footprint

The amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere
