Amoxicillin Clinical Profile and Nursing Protocols

Amoxicillin

is an oral, broad spectrum penicillin used for susceptible bacterial infections, such as ear, throat, UTI

before giving it, check for

a penicillin allergy; use caution and follow prescribing guidance if kidney function is impaired, since dosage may need adjustment

give it at the start of a

meal to reduce GI upset; shake liquid suspension well, and follow instructions for chewable or extended release forms

monitor for

nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, hives, or signs of superinfection, such as white patches in the mouth

teach patients to

take it exactly as prescribed

promptly report

a new rash, persistent or bloody diarrhea, or other concerning symptoms

if anaphylaxis occurs after amoxicillin

such as trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, widespread hives, or sudden dizziness - stop the medication and activate emergency response immediately

emergency response immediately by

support the airway, breathing, and circulation; give IM epinephrine promptly according too emergency protocol, provide oxygen, and prepare for additional airway and circulatory support

monitor

vital signs closely

document the

reaction and update the patient’s allergy record so amoxicillin and related drugs can be avoided as directed
