Example of a coastal location shaped by tectonic processes?
Montserrat - pyroclastic surges created new land.
Land can be shaped & altered by marine processes.
2 ways sea level changes due to tectonic activity?
Epeirogenic
Orogenic
Epeirogenic?
Changing size of ocean basins through tectonic activity
Will change height of sea relative to land
Tectono-eustatic change.
Orogenic?
Either earthquakes e.g. Acehenese coastline, or mountain building e.g. San Juan-Marcona.
During which height of land varies will change the relative height of seal level.
What has occurred in San Juan-Marcona region (Peru)?
What else is the Acehenese coastline linked to?
Uplift and submergence of coastlines
Submergence & Acehenese coastline?
Seismic activity permanently dropped Acehenese coastline - up to 1m & uplifted nearby islands up to 2m.
Sudden change in relative sea level caused new coastline along most of SW coast of Aceh - resulted in rapid adjustment by the shore to these new conditions.
Impacts to the coast?
Varied depending upon height of wave at impact, orientation of the coast - regard to direction of wave approach.
Also local topography, bathymetry, geology & vegetation cover.
