The Armenian Genocide

Genocide of Armenians by the Turkish government; 1,000,000 Armenians were killed.

Middle Eastern Mandates

Part of other peace treaties after WWI in which a Western nation administrated a Middle Eastern territory on behalf of the League of Nations.

Turkish leader who attempted democracy but was overly suppressive. Westernized social aspects of his nation and modernized his economy. He was largely secular; caliphate abolished in 1924 & made women equal in 1934

The homeland of the Jews according to the World Zionist Organization, but it was already inhabited by a mainly Muslim population

The Balfour Declaration

Declared Palestine to formally be home of the Jews in 1917 and received support of the League of Nations
