Syncope

Temporary loss of consciousness resulting from a drop in blood pressure

Chair Massage

A massage given in a massage chair

Chair Massage contraindications

Client that is at high risk for syncope including uncontrolled blood pressure.

Therapist seated

A massage given while therapist is seated

Therapist seated contraindications

When the massage work requires work at an angle or pressure that can't be given while seated

Client Clothed

A massage given while client is clothed

Client Clothed contraindications

Gliding effleurage may not be a good option for a clothed client as the clothing may irritate their skin. Massage lubricant should be avoided.

Sidelying

Side-lying position is Client position when he or she is lying on his or her side, usually with the hips and knees flexed slightly

Sidelying contraindications

Client should not be placed on the side of an injured bone or soft tissue

Prenatal

The time during pregnancy

Prenatal contraindications

No massage if client is high risk, has vaginal bleeding, uncontrolled gestational diabetes, eclampsia. No hydrotherapy in the form of heat except possibly hot stones. No medial thigh massage in any trimester. No prone massage after 6-8 weeks. No aromatherapy in first trimester.

Hot stone massage

A modality of massage in which hot stones are directly or indirectly applied to soft tissues

Pregnancy

Sequence of events that includes implantation, embryonic development, fetal growth, and birth. Process of gestation takes approximately 40 weeks and is divided into trimesters.

Trimester

A period of time that is one-third of the total time period

First Trimester

The first time period of pregnancy. Starts with the first day of the last period and goes through week 14.

Second Trimester

The second time period of pregnancy. Week 15 through week 28.

Third Trimester

The final time period of pregnancy. Week 29 to birth.

High risk pregnancy

A pregnancy that is accompanied by high risk for the mother/baby

Semi-reclining

Semireclining position is defined as client position when supine-lying client is half lying down and half sitting up instead of completely reclining

Abdomen

The region between the diaphragm and the pelvis

Side-lying

Side lying position is client position when he or she is lying on his or her side usually with the hips and knees flexed slightly
