How did Fleming discover penicillin?
In 1928 he went on holiday and left a Petri dish of staphylococcus out on a table - when he returned, he found that some mould had grown and killed the staphylococcus around it
What did Fleming do with his discovery?
Not much - he realised that it was penicillin and wrote his findings in a medical journal, but he never tested it on animals and instead lost interest without ever discovering its potential
What was Fleming awarded for his discovery?
A Nobel Prize in 1945
