Pericles

(460-429 B.C.E) Athenian leader who championed civic pride and encourages Athenians to participate in and spread democracy. Had Parthenon built.

Homer

(800-700s B.C.E) A Greek epic poet, author of the Iliad and the Odyssey

Sappho

(born ca. 612 B.C.E.) One of the great lyrical poets (and few famous women) of the ancient Greeks; her poetry focused on love, family, and friends, and was noted for its emotion.

Aesop

A Greek famous for his fables. Historians disagree on whether he actually existed.

Socrates

An Ancient Greek philosopher who was a teacher of Plato. He believed that people should never stop seeking knowledge. Taught by asking questions.

Plato

(430-347 BCE) An Ancient Greek philosopher who founded the Academy, a school in which scientists, students, and philosophers could meet to discuss ideas. He was taught by Socrates.

Aristotle

A Greek philosopher and student of Plato who believed people should live a life of balance and use reason. Tutored Alexander the Great

Euclid

(circa 300 BCE), Greek mathematician. Known as the "Father of Geometry" The study of flat shapes and lines is called Euclidean Geometry

Hippocrates

A scientist that believed all diseases came from natural causes. He also had high ideals for physicians & an oath was made that is still used today called the Hippocratic Oath. Known as the "Father of Western Medicine"

Archimedes

Greek scientist, inventor of the water screw, and mathematician

Pythagoras

Greek philosopher and mathematician who proved the Pythagorean theorem (A squared + B squared = C squared)

Cleisthenes

The "father" of democracy

Thucydides

Considered to be the first historian. Wrote neutral or non bias as a soldier from Athens on the losing side
