Suture

Fibrous. Synarthroses. Dense regular connective tissue connects skull bones.

Syndesmosis

Fibrous. Amphiarthroses. Dense regular connective tissue fibers between bones, interosseous membrane. (ex: Articulation between radius & ulna, and between tibia & fibula)

Gomphosis

Fibrous. Synarthroses. Periodontal, meaning around the teeth, ligaments hold tooth to bony jaw. (ex: Tooth to Jaw)

Synchondrosis

Cartilaginous. Synarthrosis. Hyaline cartilage between bones. (ex: Epiphyseal plates in growing bones; costochondral joints)

Symphysis

Cartilaginous. Amphiarthrosis. Fibrocartilage between bones. (ex: Pubic symphysis; intervertebral disc articulations)

Plane Joint

Synovial. Diarthrosis. Flattened or slightly curved faces slide across one another. Nonaxial movement. (ex: Intercarpal joints, Intertarsal joints)

Hinge Joint

Synovial. Diarthrosis. Convex feature of one bone fits into concave depression of another bone. Movement in one direction is uniaxial. Flexion and Extension. (ex: Elbow Joint (Humeroulnar, Humeroradial), Knee Joint (Femorotibial), Interphalangeal(IP) Joints)

Pivot Joint

Synovial. Diarthrosis. Bone with a rounded surface fits into a ring formed by a ligament and another bone. Rotating bone on long axis / uniaxial rotation. (ex: Atlantoaxial Joint, Superior Radioulnar joint)

Condyloid Joint

Synovial. Diarthrosis. Oval articular surface on one bone closely interfaces with a depressed oval surface on another bone. Flexion/Extension, adduction/abduction, circumduction, biaxial. (ex: Metacarpophalangeal(MP) joints, Metatarsophalangeal (MP) joints)

Saddle Joint

Synovial. Diarthrosis. Saddle-shaped articular surface on one bone closely interfaces with a saddle-shaped surface on another bone. Flexion/Extension, adduction/abduction, circumduction, some rotation. (ex: Carpometacarpal)

Ball and Socket Joint

Synovial. Diarthrosis. Round head of one bone rests within cup-shaped depression in another bone. Flexion/Extension, adduction/abduction, circumduction, rotation, multiaxial. (ex: Shoulder/Glenohumeral joint, Hip/Acetabulofemoral joint)
