Health Education
The process whereby people learn to improve their health attitude and habits to work together for the improvement of health conditions of the family, community and the nation.
Traits of a Health Educator
Traits/Qualities: Efficient, Good Communicator, Good Listener, Creative/Resourceful, Keen Observer, Systematic, Sense of Humor, Change Agent, Tactful, Analytical, Knowledgeable, Open
Patient Education (1950s)
Has been considered a major component of standard care given by nurses. The NLE identified course content in nursing school curricula to prepare nurses as teachers of others. The ANA set forth statements on the functions, standards, and qualifications for nursing practice, of which patient teaching is a key element. ALL state nurse practice acts (NPA) include teaching within the scope of nursing practice responsibilities.
American Hospital Association (1970s)
Developed the Patient’s Bill of Rights and established guidelines to ensure that patients receive complete and current information concerning their diagnosis, treatment and prognosis in terms they can reasonably be expected to understand.
Florence Nightingale (Mid-1800s)
Founder of modern nursing and ultimate educator. She emphasized the importance of teaching patients of the need for adequate nutrition, fresh air, exercise, and personal hygiene to improve their well-being.
National League of Nursing Education (NLNE) (Early 1900s)
Observed the importance of health teaching as a function within the scope of nursing practice and recognized nurses as agents for the promotion of health and the prevention of illness in all settings in which they practiced.
Institute of Healthcare Management (2006)
organized with the objective to reduce incidents of medical harm in US hospitals each year by teaching patients, their families, nursing staff, and students ways to improve care, reduce injuries, save lives, and decrease the cost of healthcare.
Sullivan Alliance (2007)
Goal is to Increase the racial and cultural mix of nursing faculty, students, and staff, who will be sensitive to the needs of clients of diverse backgrounds.
Roles of the Nurse as a Health Educator
Facilitator of Change, Contractor, Organizer, Evaluator, Coordinator of care, Trainor of trainers.
Key Elements of Ideal Relationship (Nurse as Educator)
Both parties have trust and respect. The teacher assumes the student can learn and is sensitive to individual needs. Both feel free to learn and make mistakes.

Third Party Reimbursement
Compensation for medical services paid by some party other than the patient or medical provider. Normally, that "third party" is a health insurance company — it might be a public health insurance plan, an individual private health insurance firm, or a health benefit offered by an employer.
Culture
The “totality of socially transmitted pattern of thoughts, values, meanings, and beliefs” (Purnell 2005). It is not limited to any specific ethnic group, geographical area, language, religious belief, manner of clothing, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status (Fisher 1996).

Understanding that a cultural divide exists between the patient and health professional (Winkelman 2009).

allow health education to reach broader, global audiences, including remote or underserved areas; Information can be tailored for specific demographics, improving health literacy across diverse populations.
