Alkali metals
The name given to group 1 metals, all of which have one electron in their outer energy level.
Lithium oxide
The compound formed when freshly cut lithium metal reacts rapidly with oxygen in the air.
Sodium oxide
The compound formed when sodium reacts with oxygen in the air, reacting more rapidly than lithium.
Potassium oxide
The compound formed when potassium reacts with oxygen in the air, reacting even more rapidly than sodium or lithium.
Group 1 reactivity trend with oxygen
The pattern where group 1 metals react more rapidly with oxygen as you move down the group.
Lithium ion
A particle formed when a lithium atom loses its outer electron, leaving 3 positive protons and 2 negative electrons, giving it a charge of +1 and a full outer energy level.
Oxide ion
A particle formed when an oxygen atom gains 2 outer electrons, resulting in 8 positive protons and 10 negative electrons, giving it a charge of −2.
Chlorine
A group 7 element that reacts rapidly with group 1 metals.
Lithium chloride
The compound produced when a lithium atom transfers its outer electron to a chlorine atom, producing a positive lithium ion and a negative chloride ion.
Chloride ion
A negative ion with a charge of −1 that is formed when a chlorine atom receives an electron to gain a full outer energy level.
