What is an Ionic Compound?
Compounds composed of 1 or more cation (+ve metal) and 1 or more anion (-ve non-metal)
What are ionic compounds held together by?
Ionic bonds.
What is an ionic bond?
The attraction of negative and positive ions in an ionic compound.
How are ionic compounds formed?
When the metal atoms transfer electrons to nonmetal atoms. The losing and gaining of electrons causes the atoms to become ions, who attract each other due to different charges.
Why is the formation of ionic compounds possible?
The metal’s hold on its valence electrons is very weak and the non-metal’s attracts the metal’s electrons very strongly.
What are the properties of ionic bonds?
They are hard, brittle, solid, and have high melting points.
What’s an electrolyte?
A compound that separates into ions when it dissolves in water. The solution made can conduct electricity.
Why is sea water a good conductor?
It contains ions from a variety of sources.
What is the name of the elements that can form more than one type of cation?
Multivalent. EX: Iron (Fe) 2+, 3+.
What is a polyatomic ion?
Groups of non-metal atoms that tend to stay together. They carry an overall ionic charge. (EX: Nitrate NO3 )
