SACRAMENTS
Sacrament
An outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace.
Outward sign
Something perceived by the senses, consisting of matter and form.
Sacrament to give grace
Channels through which grace enters our souls to give divine life and nourishment.
The 7 Sacraments
Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, Matrimony.
Invalid administration
When a sacrament is administered against the will of the person, it becomes invalid.
Ceremonies in sacraments
Not necessary for validity but make occasions more solemn and meaningful.
Contrition
Sorrow for sins, involves sincere examination of conscience based on the 10 Commandments.
Confession
Honestly owning up to sins and stating them to the priest.
Penance/Satisfaction
Doing what is possible to repair harm caused by sin, includes penance and prayer of sorrow.
Absolution
Efficacious sign of God’s pardon, reconciling the penitent to God and the Christian community.
Anointing of the Sick
Sacramental anointing with blessed oil for the ill or infirm, providing Christ’s healing grace.
Anointing effects
Restoration of health, encouragement of trust in God, strength against temptation, and potential physical healing for salvation.
