majority rule & minority rights
The group with the most people in it has the power to make decisions but the rights of those in the minority must be protected by those with the most power and influence.

People have ultimate ruling authority; people are the source of the government’s power
Republicanism
A philosophy of limited government with the elected representatives serving at the will of the people; also known as an indirect democracy.
Social Contract Theory
John Locke’s philosophy that citizens believe they can be ruled by an autocratic leader, but this leader cannot infringe on their natural rights.
Limited Government
A governing structure that has restricted power over its citizens and economy; normally bound by a constitution to protect civil liberties and civil rights.
Declaration of Independence
Document signed by the founding fathers listed the reasons for revolting against King George III; set the moral and legal obligations for the beginning of the American Revolution.
