omnis hic aetas piscandi navigandi atque etiam natandi studio tenetur,

Here people of all ages are possessed by eagerness for fishing, sailing, and even swimming,

maxime pueri, quos otium lususque sollicitat.

especially boys, whom leisure and sport entice.

his gloria et virtus altissime provehi:

It is their heroic boast to swim far out into the deepest water;

victor ille, qui longissime ut litus ita simul natantes reliquit.

the winner is the one who leaves both the shore and the [other] swimmers farthest behind.

hoc certamine puer quidam audentior ceteris in ulteriora tendebat.

In this contest a certain boy, more daring than the rest, kept heading further out.

delphinus occurrit, et nunc praecedere puerum nunc sequi nunc circumire,

A dolphin meets him, and now goes in front of the boy, now follows him, now goes round him,

postremo subire deponere iterum subire,

at last takes him on its back, puts him down and takes him on its back again,

trepidantemque perferre primum in altum,

and carries the scared boy, first into deep water,

mox flectit ad litus, redditque terrae et aequalibus.

then turns back to the shore and restores him to land and to his companions.

serpit per coloniam fama; concurrere omnes,

The story creeps through the colony and everyone runs together

ipsum puerum tamquam miraculum aspicere,

looks at the boy, as if he were a marvel,

interrogare audire narrare.
