3. Broom and dustpan

Use a broom and dustpan to clean up glass on the floor.

Where to throw broken glass?

Designated glass bin - in Diep’s room, just tell instructor first and she will clean it up for you.

4. Chemical usage

Don’t pour chemicals that you haven’t used back into the same container. Dispose of it instead.

5. Solid items/can’t touch this

Solid items used in the lab can’t be disposed of in regular trash. Dispose it in the hazardous waste bin.

How to heat and move a test tube safely?

Wear gloves, apron, safety goggles, and tie up hair. Use tongs to move the tube.

Hood

Ventilates a small area so that toxic gases may safely escape.

Use this to rinse out your eyes if you get a chemical in them.

Container that comes in various sizes that is shaped like an upside down funnel.

Heat source without an open flame.

Scoop

Utensil used primarily to transfer solids.

Filter Paper

A piece of paper that liquids and very small particles can pass through commonly used for separating materials.

Test Tube

Small finger length container for reactions that may be heated.

Thermometer

Used to measure temperature; measures in °C

Well Tray

A set of wells where multiple small experiments can be conducted simultaneously.

Safety Shower

A unit to wash a person’s whole body if it comes in contact with hazardous chemicals.

Tongs

Used to pick up and hold hot items.

What are the three things Ms.Diep requires us to know about labs?

1. Proper lab attire (apron, gloves, goggles, tied up hair, closed-toed shoes, etc)

2. Know how to clean up (Tell the teacher after a spill (ex she will pick up dropped glass), throw solid chemicals into the hazardous waste box, have clear walkways, etc)

3. How to handle chemicals (don’t touch the substance, waft the smell, don’t point the tube towards you, touch the hot tube when its cold enough)
