Walking bass

Characterized by a steady rhythm and a continuous flow of notes, typically played in a crotchet pattern, literally ‘walks’ up the arpeggio and then back down again. Fundamental bass line in jazz.

Stride bass

On beats 1 and 3, the left hand strikes a deep bass note or octave. On beats 2 and 4, the hand leaps upward to strike a mid-range chord. Ragtime inspired, popularised in 1920s.

Boogie-woogie bass

Uses a steady quaver pulse. The left hand typically plays repeating, driving patterns like the "broken octave" or a walking blues shuffle layout.
