X-ray machine
The device that generates dental X-rays for radiographic imaging.
Tubehead
The assembly that houses the X-ray tube and focal spot; attaches to the support arm and yoke.
Focal spot
The small area on the X-ray tube's anode where electrons collide to produce X-rays.
PID (Position Indicating Device)
A device on the tubehead that shows the beam's direction to help align the radiation field.
BID (Beam Indicating Device)
A device that indicates where the X-ray beam will be directed.
Cone
A conical piece that shapes the X-ray beam and is used with beam/positioning devices.
Vertical Angulation Indicator Scale
Scale used to set the beam's vertical angle relative to the tooth.
0° to +90°
Range of vertical angulation settings available on the unit.
Vertical Angulation Adjustment
Up/down movement of the tubehead to change the vertical angle.
Horizontal adjustment / Pivot
Left-to-right movement of the tubehead to adjust horizontal alignment.
Support arm
The arm that supports the tubehead and allows positioning.
Control panel (Analog type)
Non-digital interface used to set exposure factors (kVp, mA, time).
Exposure time
Duration of the X-ray exposure, which can be pre-set or adjustable.
mA (milliamperes)
The tube current that controls the number of X-ray photons produced.
Pre-selected exposure time
Preset exposure times for different tooth types, adults vs. kids, or film type.
