Artis

An Italian word referring to craftsmanship, skill, mastery of form, inventiveness, and the association between forms and ideas and between material and techniques.

Ar

An Aryan root meaning to join or put together.

Artizein

A Greek word meaning to prepare.

Arkiskein

A Greek word meaning to put together.

Visual Arts

Arts that we perceive with our eye and which occupy space, including two-dimensional forms (paintings, drawing, photography) and three-dimensional forms (sculpture, landscape, ceramic or furnitures).

Medium

The means or material by which the artist communicates his idea or communicates himself to his fellows.

Auditory / Time Arts

Arts that can be heard and are expressed in time, such as music and literature.

Combined Arts

Also known as performing arts, these are arts that can be seen and heard and exist in space and time, including dance, opera, drama, and movies.

The Nature of Art

The four foundational principles stating that art must be man-made, must be creative (not imitative), must benefit and satisfy man in practical life, and must be expressed through a certain medium or material.

The Subject of Art

The foundation of the creation of the work of art, usually represented as a person, object, scene, or event.

Representational or Objective Arts

Art forms that represent subjects, including painting, sculpture, graphic arts, literature, and theatre arts.

Non-Representational or Non-Objective Arts

Artworks that have no resemblance to any real subjects.

Aesthetic Function

The function of art through which man becomes conscious of the beauty of nature, learning to use, love, and preserve it for his enjoyment and appreciation.

Utilitarian Function

The function of art through which man lives conveniently, making shelter, transportation, and other luxuries in life possible.

Cultural Function

The function of art through printed matter that transmits and preserves skills and knowledge from one generation to another.

Social Function

The function of art through civic and graphic arts whereby man learns to love and help each other, fostering international understanding and cooperation.
