Atom
The smallest particle of an element that still has that element’s properties
Proton
A subatomic particle with a positive charge (+1) found in the nucleus; has a mass of 1 amu.
Neutron
A subatomic particle with no charge (neutral) found in the nucleus; has a mass of 1 amu.
Electron
A subatomic particle with a negative charge (–1) that moves around the nucleus; has a mass of about 0 amu.
Ion
An atom that has gained or lost electrons, giving it a positive or negative charge
Atomic Number
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom; it identifies the element and is located on the periodic table
