A few weeks ago…

Police were in my apartment building for hours and nobody would tell me what was happening. I would approach and ask policer officers, and be dismissed as if I didn’t matter. I was not looking for private details or names. I just wanted to know if I was safe, if my roommates were sage, and whether something serious was happening in the place I lived.

Hours later…

I would only find out through the news that the incident involved a gun and drugs.

That experience made me realize something.

Public safety info technically exists, but it is impossibly hard for a regular person to access or understand it.

The Waterloo Regional Police already…

publishes incident reports online.

The problem is that the information is almost unusable in the state that they provide it.

It is literally just plaintext on a website.

If you are trying to understand…

what is happening around you, that format is frustrating. You have to read through reports, attempt to mentally place locations, and guess if something is relevant to your area and family.

My solution is the Waterloo Police Maps.

Waterloo Police Maps automatically takes publicly available Waterloo Police Incidents, and turns it into a live map on your phone.

Instead of scrolling through incident reports on the internet, users can see police activity as pings on a map. They can filter by area, type of incident, and fiscuss incidents with neighbours online.

If something happened near their home, school, or workplace, they could understand it quicjly and make a better effort to keep their family safe.

The goal…

isn’t to create fear. The goal is to make public information clearer and more accessible.

This matters to me…

because I have personally felt how helpless it is when something serious happens nearby and the information isn’t clear.

People should not have to wait hours, search news sites, or decode a police webpage just to understand their own community.
