Gender

* women tend to have physically different builds to men lack the strength and endurance

* negative stereotyping may discourage women participating in sport, women are associated with Pilates, yoga

* women’s sport gets less coverage

Facilities for women in sport

* developed slower than for men
* eg. access to training centres, stadiums to play at

Define ethnicity

A social group that shares cultural traditions, religion, other factors

how does Ethnicity (race and nationality) effect participation rates in sport?

* there’s a stereotype of Black Caribbean and African groups have better physiological make up, meaning they are better adapted to some sports

* Inequality/imbalance of ethnic groups

* minority groups don’t have access to as many sports

* lack of players and coaches from ethnic background

how does Age effect participation rates in sport?

* physical limitations (harder for older people playing sports) Fitness levels decline and body becomes less able to recover from impact injuries

* Younger people involved more in team sports, whereas older people are more involves in individual activities (less physically strenuous)

* tidal volume decreases (amount of air inhaled per breath)

* stroke volume decreases (amount of blood pumped by the heat per minute)

Family and friends

* role models- lack of family support can have an impact on participation in sport

how does Disability have an effect on participation rates?

* physical and mental impairments that have a substantial and long term effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal daily activities

* Sporting barriers: lack of clubs/coaches, facilities that are safe (ramps)

* travel may not be as assessable

what are Adapted sports?

Sports that have changed so that people with a physical disability can perform alongside individuals that don’t have a physical disability

how do Socio economic influences have an effect on participation rates?

* financial cost/income

* Fees for facilities, travel, equipment

\
* high paid jobs meaning more likely to pay for more expensive sports eg. skiing, rowing, horse riding

\
* Low paid jobs, more likely to go for sports such as: football, basketball, running, which are less expensive
