Topic 6 - Risk Management for Events

Hazard

anything with the potential to cause bodily injury (could be physical, chemical, ergonomic, biological, mechanical, electrical)

Risk

likelihood that a hazard will cause an anticipated degree of harm or injury

Risk assessment

careful examination of what is in the workplace and would likely cause harm to people so that the employer can weigh up whether he or she has taken enough precautions or should do more to prevent harm

Risk assessment process

1. identifying and analysing safety and health hazards associated with work

2. assessing the risks level

3. priortising measures to control the hazards and reduce the risk

Risk management

handling the problems arising from the identified hazards and assessing and dealing with them. it is also the starting point for producing contingency plans and emergency procedures in work areas that carry risks

Risk management process

1. identify hazards associated with work areas and activities

2. conduct a risk assessment of the hazards to work activities

3. implement control and monitor such risks

4. document and communicate the risks and control measures to all parties concerned

5. review the RA as and when the needs arise

likelihood

probability or frequency of the incident (rare, remote, occasional, frequent, almost certain)

severity

estimated losses to the stakeholders after the incident (catastrophic, major, moderate, minor, negligible)

risk priority number

anticipated consequences to the event stakeholders once the risk becomes a reality

risk management hierachy

elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, personal protective equipment (PPE)
