Epizootic

A disease that affects the same species at the same time (epidemic for humans).

Enzootic

A disease that is constantly present at baseline level in animal production.

Panzootic

A disease affecting animals of many species especially over a wide area.

Zoonotic

A disease that can be transmitted between animals and humans.

Anthrax

A highly infectious disease caused by Baucillus anthracis bacteria.

Foot-and-mouth disease

A highly contagious viral disease affecting cattle and swine with a mortality rate of 1-5% as adults and 20-50% as young animals.

Brucellosis

A disease caused by various types of Brucella.

Equine Encephalomyelitis

A disease with three types: Eastern, Western, and Venezuelan.

PMWS

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrone; a viral disease in swine.

Poultry enteritis mortality syndrome (PEMS)

A disease affecting Turkey poults with a morbidity rate of 100%.

Exotic Newcastle Disease (S. California)

A disease outbreak in S. California that affected 12 million commercial poultry.

TSE (Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies)

Diseases affecting all species, including humans, occurring when there are protein-filled prions that transmit incurable brain disease.

Types of TSE

Examples of Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies including Bovine spongiform encelopathies, Scrapie, and Chronic Wasting Disease.
