Matter can be classified as a pure substance or a mixture

Pure substance

Pure substances are made up of one type of particle.

Pure substances can be made up of elements or compounds.

Elements

Elements contain one type of atom and are found on the periodic table.

Compounds

Compounds contain more than one type of elemen

Homogeneous mixtures ( Solutions)

Homogeneous mixtures also known as solutions (salt and water) looking at a solution you cant tell the different parts apart.

Heterogeneous mixtures

Heterogeneous mixtures can be a suspension or mechanical mixtures.

Suspensions

Suspensions are not uniform throughout, they contain two or more phases.

Suspensions may seperate with time ( Products that say “shake well before use”).

Mechanical mixtures

Mechanical mixtures have two or more visible phases.

It can be solids mixed with other solids

Can be often seperated by hand
