Reasons for exploration
1) They wanted to find an all water route.(north west passage) to get spices, silks and other riches
2) religion, curiosity, national pride
Inventions
1) compass- follow directions on uncharted seas
2) Printing press- spread stories of exploration causing others to explore
3) Caravel- ship that can sail against the wind
Colonization
-settled along the east coast, New England, middle and southern colonies
James town
first successful British colony in North America
pilgrims
came to America for religious reasons- wanted to separate themselves from the Church of England
Mayflower compact
agreement to obey the laws for the general good of all the colony. This was an example of representative government
Economies were based on the geography and climate of the regions:
New England- fishing, shipbuilding, whaling
Middle- Bread basket, fertile soil, wheat and corn
Southern- Agriculture, CASH CROPS, tobacco, rice, indigo
House of Burgesses
First representative (people vote for their leaders)
Virginia colony- promoted self government and established their own legislatures and constitutions independent of the king
Mercantilism
economic theory that states that colonies exist only to make their mother country rich. England set up the original 13 colonies to make profit off of them. Controlled them through navigation acts (laws made by England that put restrictions on trade)
England refused to enforce these acts for a while- Salutary neglect
French and Indian war
-Great Britain defeated france
-Albany plan of union( ben franklins plan of joining all the colonies together to defeat France)
-france lost all of its land in North America.
After FI war
-war caused Britain to go int debt and they expected the 13 colonies to pay for it
-Proclamation of 1763- Denied settlers of going west of the Appalachian mountains (wanted to keep a tight leash on the colonies and keep them from getting into fights with the native Americans)
