what are decomposers?

microorganisms e.g fungi and bacteria

microorganisms e.g fungi and bacteria

2
New cards

what do microorganisms do 2

they break down dead organisms material at a microscopic level. this means nutrients can be released and recycled.

e.g urine, animal waste

3
New cards

what are Saprophytes

organisms feeding on dead material

4
New cards

what are detritivore and what do they create?

small animals that speed up decomposition by shredding organic material into very small pieces. This way, this creates a larger S.A for decomposers to work on.

5
New cards

what are Detritus

certain material that Detritivore break down

6
New cards

how do decomposers release nutrients 3

 1. Decomposers release enzymes to break down substances in organic matter

 2. They then absorb nutrients into bodies for growth and energy

 3. this is either transferred to the soil/environment or to other organisms when eaten

what factors affect ROD (rate of decomposition)

 1. WARM TEMP: high temps=enzymes denature-prevention of reaction Low temps= ROD is slow

 2. MOIST ENVIROMENT: low water= reactions within microorganism slow down or stops and reduces process of decomposition

 3. AEROBIC CONDITIONS: oxygen needed for respiration of microorganism. anaerobic prevents most forms of decomposition
