Elastic Fibers
Provide flexibility to the tissue.
Elastic Cartilage
Type of cartilage that is very flexible and found in structures that require flexibility.
Fibrocartilage
Characterized by high density of collagen fibers and provides durability.
Osteocytes
Mature cells of bony tissue, responsible for maintaining the bony matrix.
Osseous Tissue
Technical term for bony tissue.
Plasma
The fluid nonliving matrix of blood.
Fascia
Connective tissue that binds various layers of organs in the body.
Superficial Fascia
Also known as subcutaneous layer, consists mostly of adipose tissue.
Deep Fascia
Connective tissue that binds the intermediate layers of organs, consisting mostly of dense fibrous connective tissue.
Subserous Fascia
The deepest layer of fascia, characterized by areolar connective tissue.
Mucous Membrane
Lines internal body cavities that are continuous with the external environment.
Serous Membrane
Lines internal body cavities that have no connection to the external environment.
Synovial Membrane
Lines freely movable joints and produces synovial fluid to reduce friction.
Keratinized Membrane
Type of cutaneous membrane that contains keratin to provide strength.
Lamina Propria
Areolar connective tissue layer of the mucous membrane.
