Quantum theory
theory which describes the structure of atoms and molecules
Bohr model
electrons go around a nucleus in circular orbits
postulates:
electron moves in a circular orbit - electrostatic force = centripetal force
only certain orbits are allowed (certain radii) - angular momentum can only have certain integer multiples of a constant
if electron move between orbits, light (energy) is emitted
wave-particle duality
small particles behave as waves
experimental evidence - Davisson and Germer 1925
de Broglie relation
all matter has characteristics of wavelength and momentum:
short wavelength = high momentum
long wavelength = low momentum
energy of a wave is its curvature
more curvature = more kinetic energy
