Ethics definition
rules that dictate an individual’s conduct. they form a system of rules that groups and societies are judged on. an ethic in sport would be that athletes stick to the spirit of the rules of the game
Deviance definition
a word that describes unacceptable behaviour within a culture. any behaviour that differs from the perceived social or legal norm is seen as deviant
two examples of deviance in sport
performance enhancing drugs and blood doping
what is blood doping?
as defined by WADA, the misuse of techniques and/or substances to increase one’s red blood cell count
what does WADA stand for?
World Anti-Doping Agency
why would an athlete want to carry out blood doping?
a greater number of red blood cells (RBC) means that higher volumes of haemoglobin are present, allowing extra oxygen to be transported to the working muscles → higher levels of performance without the use of anaerobic energy systems
process of blood doping
commonly involves:
removal of approximately 2 pints of the athlete’s blood several weeks prior to the competition
blood is frozen until 1-2 days before the competition, when it is thawed and injected back into the athlete
which type of athletes most commonly use blood doping
endurance athletes, such as distance runners and cyclists
