why would an athlete want to carry out blood doping?

a greater number of red blood cells (RBC) means that higher volumes of haemoglobin are present, allowing extra oxygen to be transported to the working muscles → higher levels of performance without the use of anaerobic energy systems

  • removal of approximately 2 pints of the athlete’s blood several weeks prior to the competition
