What is the process of Science?
obs→que→hyp→exp→explain(repeat)→theory
who developed theory of evolution?
Aristotle: hierarchal unchanging structure of organisms
Humboldt: ecosystems far apart are similar based on similar global processes
Lyell: slow processes accumulat change over time (eg. grand canyon)
Anning: geological discoveries to explain evolution
Edmonstone: taxidermist that Darwin worked for
Darwin: breeding experiments that prompts idea of phylogenic trees, natural selection
The Eclipse of Darwinism
A period in the early 20th century when Mendelian genetics challenged Darwin's natural selection as the primary explanation for evolutionary change, leading to a decline in the acceptance of Darwin's ideas.
The modern Synthesis
combo of darwinism(evolution) & mendelian genetics(inheritance); what our current theory of evolution is called
What ‘defines’ life? What do all living things share?
properties of life; organized structure, homeostasis, growth, reproduction, adaptation, response to stimuli, energy processing
eg. how does a tree have properties of life?
energy processing: photosynthesis
reproduction: seed
response to stimuli: growing towards the sun
order and organization: traits are organized for optimal survival (leaves on top, roots at bottom)
eg. bacteria?
reproduction: cloning
order and organization: structured with nucleus?? inside and membrane surrounding
response to stimuli: population growth based on surrounding environment
energy processing: respiring
evolutionary change: mutation based on stimulus?
why is fire not alive? what properties does it not meet?
fire do not contain cells (ie. they don’t respire)
what is the smallest unit of life? Why?
Cells; anything smaller than that can’t carry out life processes independently
What is Ecology?
how organisms interact and form relationships with each other
Biotic
Abiotic
What is Evolution?
how population genetically change over generations based on internal and external factors
what are the processes of life?
movement, respiration, excretion, reproduction, growth, nutrition, stimulus
