What is the thick filament?
Myosin
What is the thin filament?
Actin
What is the z discs
Make up sarcomeres defining their boundaries
What is the A band
Spans the entire length of the myosin filaments
What is the I band
Region where only actin filaments are present located on either side of the a band
What is the I Band function
The I band shortens during contraction as actin filaments slide toward midline.
What is the A band function
The A band does not change in length during contraction, but the overlap between the actin and myosin filaments increases as the muscle contracts
What is the function of the Z disks
The z disk serves as an attachment site for the actin filaments keeping them in place during contraction and relaxation. During muscle contraction the Z disks move closer together as the actin filaments are pulled toward the M-line.
