Pop Music

Also known as popular music, a genre of adaptation, assimilation, innovation, and experimentation covering the widest combinations of music forms, styles, and genres.

Tessitura

Also known as voice strength, it is the middle of your voice range where you sing most comfortably, referred to by voice coaches as the 'sweet voice'.

Range

All the pitches that your voice can produce from lowest to highest.

Head Voice

A singing register used in singing high pitches where muscle tension and vibration are felt in the head, with falsetto and whistle as examples.

Chest Voice

A singing register used when singing powerful weighted notes without using head voice.

Mixed Voice

The combination of chest voice and head voice that allows experienced singers to eliminate vocal breaks smoothly.

Breaks

The few pitches that you can sing using both your chest voice and head voice.

Vocal Timbre

The distinct quality that distinguishes the voice of one singer from another.

Vocal Fry

The lowest voice tone which sounds deep, often used in rock singing.

Yodeling

A singing style in country music that involves imitating the sound of fiddles through the voice.

Bass Guitar

Also known as electric bass, it is the lowest-pitched member of the guitar family.

Hammer-on

A bass playing technique where you push a left-hand finger down on the fretboard to make a sound.

Pull-off

A bass playing technique where you lift a left-hand finger up, opposite of a hammer-on.

Glissando

A technique done when you slide your right-hand fingers continuously from one fret to another.

Pedaling

A bass playing technique that uses one note, often an open string, to form a groove.

Slapping

A bass technique involving using the bony edge of one's knuckle to quickly strike the string against the fretboard.

Snare Drum

A drum with metal strings underneath that give a buzzing sound, playing backbeat, accents, and rolls.

Tom-toms

Two or more pitched drums (low, mid, and high) that play during drum fills, solos, or ad-libs.

Groove

A repeated drum pattern that sets and maintains the rhythm and tempo of the music.

Fill

A drumming technique that provides variety and breaks the repetitive sound of drumming by straying from the main groove to provide transitions.

Guitar Lick

A short phrase of notes played once or twice in a song to showcase a guitarist's skill and serve as a unique motif.

Alternate Picking

A guitar technique employing string playing with a pick using continuous alternating downward and upward strokes.

Vibrato

A technique executed when a guitar string is repeatedly rocked back and forth, causing the pitch to quiver.

Sweep Picking

Playing notes on consecutive strings in a downward or upward motion with a pick while using the fretting hand to produce specific notes rapidly.

Damping

Also known as palm-muting or choking, done when the palm presses against vibrating strings to reduce, stop, or mute the sound.

Riffs

A catchy repeated sequence of notes or chords throughout a song that gives structure and character to a piece of music.

Legato

A keyboard technique using fluid-like, continuous motion where each note is played to its maximum duration and blends into the next.

Staccato

Also known as detached playing, a keyboard technique where fingers leave the keys immediately without a sustaining sound.

Music Notation Program

Also known as score-writers, computer software or applications used for creating, editing, and printing music sheets.

Ma-Yi Theater Company

A Filipino-American theater organization founded in 1989 that covers subjects ranging from Filipino history to modern issues.

Sining Bayan

An organization of Filipino playwrights that tackled the lives of Filipino agricultural workers in California and staged 'Visions of a War Bride'.
